Management and Staff of Escape Gallery and Escape Coffee Lounge wish to extend to all our customers the very best for Christmas and the New Year and thank you for your support during 2009.
The Gallery and Coffee Lounge will be closed from Christmas Day Friday 25th December and will open again on Sunday 3rd January 2010.

It should be celebrated that artists have different points of view. These points of view are driven and supported by individual priorities, aesthetics, values, experiences and opportunities in life. Each artist has an individual and unique life journey and acquires an internal portfolio of inspiration that forms the basis of the many diverse styles, techniques and resultant works of art.
Its our artists' points of view that confront people with choices that will enable them to address their own values and discover what drives and motivates them in their daily lives.
THE GOLDEN MEAN
A mysterious mathematical ratio that is found repeatedly in nature and provides the universal formula for beauty.
Also known as the Divine Proportion, the Golden Mean has been studied by mathematicians, scientists, architects and artists for over 2000 years and is believed to have been incorporated into historic structures such as the Parthenon, as well as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Salvador Dali’s The Sacrament of the Last Supper.
The Golden Mean exhibition opened on Saturday night Nov. 28th
Five internationally recognised artists came together to present a magnificent exhibition of oil, acrylic, watercolour and gouache paintings and bronze sculpture.
David Calrow’s body of work shows his progression over several years from skilful flower studies to intricate and masterful works that display outstanding 3D imaging.
Some of David’s meticulously detailed artworks are inspired by the historic pubs and abandoned buildings he has encountered on his extensive travels through the Australian Outback.
His intricate renditions bring every tiny detail to life and his understanding of light and shade invite the viewer to look into the shadows where they’ll invariably find even more elements to the ‘story’.
Reptiles – and particularly Australian lizards – are another of David’s favourite subjects and he paints them with a familiarity that gives the animal a quality of being right there. The detail of scale and claw, eye and expression is exquisite, creating a presence that is both enigmatic and revealing.
Adding further complexity to his paintings, David often creates a surrealistic quality by merging creatures into a mosaic pattern that simply doesn’t look like it could have been created by hand.
Hours of laborious work go into each and every one of David Calrow’s paintings and he produces only a small number of originals each year which are, consequently, in high demand. Selected works are also now available in limited edition prints of no more than 95 copies per piece.
His works have sold steadily over the years and he has been selected exclusively to supply limited edition prints for the Ashley Medical Centre in Sydney, with 22 prints on permanent display.
Most recently, his painting of the NSW state floral emblem – the waratah – was presented to the NSW Governor, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, by the University of NSW’s Medical Research Foundation and now hangs in the main foyer of Government House in Sydney.
Not surprisingly, David’s background is in commercial photography and newspaper production. He also worked for some time in the ABC’s special effects department, further enhancing his creative three dimensional skills. He studied at the historic Julian Ashton Art School for a brief period in the late 1960s before studying interior design and sculpture at East Sydney Tech.
